A díszmű az Osztrák Császárság néprajzi sokszínűségét mutatja be 50 dekoratív, kézzel színezett rézmetszeten keresztül (William Ellis és William Poole munkái). A kétnyelvű – angol és francia – kísérőszöveggel ellátott munka a birodalom multietnikus jellegét hangsúlyozza, bejárva a területet Tiroltól Dalmácián át Bukovináig. A táblák a korabeli magyar, erdélyi, román, cseh, dalmát, osztrák és lengyel zsidó népviseleteket, valamint divattörténeti ruházatokat vonultatnak fel, külön illusztrációkat szentelve Egernek és környékének is. A mű három kifejezetten magyar vonatkozású ábrázolást tartalmaz: egy magyar parasztot, egy vármegyei asszonyt és egy alsó-magyarországi pandúrt. Az erdélyi fejezeteknél a kötet részletesen tárgyalja a nagyszebeni szász viseleteket

Korabeli, szélesen bordázott, dombornyomott, aranyozott gerincű sötétkét maroquin kötésben, a táblák szélei háromszoros aranyozott vonalazással és dombornyomott virág ornamentikával díszített. Körül arany lapélekkel.

First edition. One of a series of costume books published by Miller (the other titles comprised costumes of Russia, for which see here below, China, and the Ottoman Empire), included in this volume are clothes from Tirol, Hungary, Bohemia, Transylvania, the Dalmatian coast, Moravia, and those of Jews from Poland. The pictures are copied by the engravers William Ellis and William Poole, from a collection which had been recently published in Vienna, called 'Costumes des Etats de l'Empereur'. Bertrand de Moleville, author of the text, was sometime a minister for Louis XVI. Plates alternating with text page, English on one side, French on the other, all of which is unpaginated.
Contemporary full dark blue morocco with gilt raised bands. Boards framed in triple gilt fillet and blind-embossed floral ornaments. All edges gilt.

Première édition contenant 50 planches hors-texte gravées par Ellis et Pool, finement coloriées à l'époque. Ces planches représentent de nombreux personnages populaires en costume : paysans et villageois de la Haute Autriche, de la haute Carniole, du Comté de Neutra, de la plaine de Moravie, tyrolien, hongrois, des bohémiens, etc. ainsi que trois planches de types juifs (juive et juifs polonais, juif de Montgatz). Chaque planche est accompagnée de sa description en anglais et en français.
Élégante reliure en maroquin bleu foncé, dos à six nerfs dorés. Plats ornés d'un triple filet doré et de motifs floraux à froid. Tranches dorées.
