Francesco Griselini (1717–1787) olasz tudós Velencében született. 1774-ben Josef Brigido Freiherr von Mahrenfels meghívására beutazta a Temesi Bánságot, hogy tanulmányozza a régiót és népeit. Két és fél év után adta ki jelen művét, amelyben részletesen leírja a Bánát történetét, politikai és gazdasági-társadalmi berendezkedését és szokásait. A könyv második része a régió földrajzi és geológiai jellemzőit, ásványkincseit és termálvizeit ismerteti. A nyolc tábla főként a Bánát területén addig fennmaradt vagy felfedezett régiségeket illusztrálja. A kötethez készült térképet Augustin Cipps (1776–1780) orvos, amatőr rézmetsző metszette. A díszes címkeret mellett Temesvár látképét láthatjuk, az előtérben kocsin ülő alak pedig alighanem maga a tudós, Griselini. M: 59×67 cm. Ritka.
A két kötet egybekötve, professzionálisan javított XIX. század közepi félvászon kötésben, erezett lapszélekkel. Egyébként tiszta példány, jó állapotú mellékletekkel.
Francesco Griselini (1717–1787), an Italian scholar, was born in Venice. In 1774, at the invitation of Josef Brigido Freiherr von Mahrenfels, he traveled through the Banat of Temeswar to study the region and its peoples. After two and a half years, he published the present work, offering a detailed account of the history, political, economic, and social structure, as well as the customs of the Banat. The second part of the book outlines the geographical and geological features, mineral resources, and thermal waters of the region. The eight plates primarily illustrate antiquities preserved or discovered in the Banat territory.
The accompanying map was engraved by Augustin Cipps (active 1776–1780), a physician and amateur copper engraver. Beside the ornate cartouche, a view of Temesvár (Timișoara) is depicted, with the figure seated in the carriage in the foreground likely representing the scholar himself, Griselini. Map size: 59×67 cm. Rare.
Two volumes bound in one, in a professionally restored mid-19th-century half-cloth binding with marbled edges. Otherwise a clean copy with plates in good condition.
